Coquitlam requires a building permit for structural renovation work — removing or replacing drywall, altering insulation or ventilation, moving a window or door opening, or converting space into a secondary suite — while purely cosmetic work such as re-roofing, re-cladding or replacing cabinets and flooring is exempt. The City issues its own plumbing permits, but electrical and gas work goes through Technical Safety BC rather than City Hall. A secondary suite is permitted in most single-family homes, limited to one per dwelling. We prepare the drawing package the City's checklist calls for and coordinate the Technical Safety BC permits alongside the building permit application.
