Renovating in Surrey: what's required
In Surrey, a residential building permit is usually required for renovating work such as interior renovations, finishing a basement or building an addition, and a secondary suite needs the necessary building permits; replacing flooring or minor repairs to the outside of the home do not need one. Electrical work is permitted through the City's own desk, where a homeowner can take out the permit themselves or hand it to a licensed contractor; gas work instead goes through Technical Safety BC, which allows the same homeowner option unless the property is a strata, a duplex, or a business operates from the home. Most interior renovations involve some form of structural work, and any change to structural elements may call for sealed, signed structural drawings on top of the applicable site and floor plans. We prepare that package and deal with the plan reviewer directly.

Do I need a permit for a renovation in Surrey?
Renovations that change structure or touch plumbing or electrical generally need City of Surrey permits — the City issues electrical permits directly, while gas permits come from Technical Safety BC. Drawings — site plan, floor plan, sections — are part of the building permit application. We confirm the scope for your project at the consultation and prepare and manage the application ourselves.
