Renovating in Port Coquitlam: what's required
Port Coquitlam requires a building permit to remove, add or relocate interior walls, complete a previously unfinished area such as a basement, or create a secondary suite. The City issues its own plumbing permits, but gas and electrical work is inspected by Technical Safety BC (the City's page still calls it the BC Safety Authority) rather than City Hall. A secondary suite is built under a Building Permit and is only permitted in the RS-1 to RS-4 zones, and a builder contractor needs a valid City business licence before a Building Permit can be issued. We prepare the drawing package the City's application calls for and coordinate the Technical Safety BC inspections alongside the building permit.

4.7from 34 Google reviews of our parent company, Pacific Coast ContractingDo I need a permit for a renovation in Port Coquitlam?
Work affecting structure or plumbing generally needs a City of Port Coquitlam building permit; gas and electrical inspections are carried out by Technical Safety BC, not City Hall. Cosmetic updates usually don't need a permit. As a Port Coquitlam company we deal with the City's permit counter constantly — we confirm your project's scope at the consultation and run the application for you.
Are you actually based in Port Coquitlam?
Yes — our office is at 853 Seaborne Avenue. Port Coquitlam is where we live and work, our crews are minutes from any address in the city, and local jobs get the scheduling benefit of that.
Can you renovate my basement into a suite?
Yes, and it's one of our most requested Port Coquitlam projects. We design to the code requirements that make a suite legal — fire separation, egress windows, ceiling heights, ventilation — prepare the permit drawings, and build it under one itemised contract.
What will my renovation cost?
That depends on scope and the state of the house, so we don't guess — we itemise. After a free consultation at your home you get a quote that breaks down scope, materials, labour and contingency line by line, before any work begins.
